Once again, PHISSUG will be conducting a series of bi-monthly back-to-basic short seminars for the month of August, September and October in the 16^th floor of Microsoft Philippines. Entitled “A PHISSUG Fundamental Series”, this series will attempt once again to bridge the gap in understanding our basic knowledge of SQL Server and databases in general. The series also aims to strengthen our appreciation of the basic concepts that will eventually lead us to effectively use SQL Server and design and deploy efficient databases.

First in the series will be the following:

According to a report Computer Economics, IT spending for this year until the next is expected to drop by as much as 50% compared to previous levels.  This is attributed to several factors, but most notably the overall downturn in the US economy which indirectly affects offshore units and providers of outsourcing services in the Philippines.  This puts more pressure on IT Departments to streamline its processes and increase the efficiency of the existing infrastructure.

The purpose of this seminar is to provide a comprehensive set of best practices and strategies for the installation and configuration of MS SQL Server that can be applied in different scenarios, from basic to high-availability, high-performance setup.  It will take a look at the different factors that affect the end-user experience, such as the computing hardware, network, operating system, disk subsystem and file layouts, accounts, CPU, and memory, among others.  By understanding how these factors are interrelated, measures can be taken to proactively increase the efficiency of the SQL Server installation and effectively squeeze more bang out of the buck.
